A watercolour and bodycolour drawing depicting Princess Helena standing upon clouds; the Princess Royal is seated with Princess Alice and Prince Arthur on the left; Prince Alfred is in the centre holding a glass; Princess Louise on the right.
The royal children often performed plays and mounted tableaux for their parents. One such performance was arranged for the Queen and Prince Albert’s wedding anniversary in 1854. Here, the children pose around Princess Helena in a tableau illustrating James Thomson’s poem The Seasons. For the Queen’s birthday, Prince Albert commissioned this record. The text of the poems was illustrated with photographs by Roger Fenton coloured by Carl Haag.
