Carvings from the ruined temple at Masulipatnam, on the coast of Andhra Pradesh, illustrating the avatars of Vishnu, all with explanations in Telugu. This is one of three related architectural drawings in the Royal Collection (see also RCINs 930165 and 930166) drawn in pen-and-ink and wash by local south Indian draughtsmen in the service of the East India Company. They were commissioned by Colin MacKenzie, the first Surveyor-General of India as part of the Company's project to survey Southern India under British rule.
