Kava bowl c. 1982
Wood | 11.0 x 26.0 x 26.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 92529
-
A deep wooden kava or yaqona bowl, on twenty-one carved circular peg legs. Bowls for the preparation and drinking of yaqona are particularly valued in Fijian society as a central part of public ritual. The deepest bowls are used for serving the drink in traditional welcome ceremonies, during which the honoured guest receives a cup of yaqona. The drink is made by pounding the yaqona root to a powder before combining with water and straining.
Provenance
Previously thought to have been presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Government and People of Fiji, November 1982. As this bowl has now been identified as Samoan, this is less likely but still possible.
