A watercolour depicting a crowded interior scene from the Drawing-Room at Balmoral during the Christening of Princess Victoria Eugenie on 23 November 1887. Signed, and in monogram: R.T. Pritchett.
Princess Victoria Eugenie was the daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, and her husband Henry, Prince of Battenberg (who are seen from behind on the left in this watercolour). The infant Princess was the first royal baby to be born at Balmoral Castle.R.T. Pritchett drew for the Queen on a number of ceremonial occasions, and was amenable to making alterations to his drawings when suggested by his patron; in the case of this watercolour, Pritchett submitted a number of revised versions to Queen Victoria. A worked up version of the first sketch Pritchett made of this scene, which the Queen disliked, was reproduced in the Graphic of 10 November 1887.
