Born in Bristol, Green was a landscape painter, astronomer, art instructor and author of drawing manuals. Appointed 'Instructor in Landscape Painting in Watercolours in Ordinary to Her Majesty' in 1881, he served as drawing tutor to Queen Victoria and her youngest daughter Princess Beatrice at Balmoral in 1881. He later contributed illustrations for Queen Victoria's More Leaves from the Journal of Life in the Highlands, published in 1884.
