Edward Walton was a member of the Glasgow Boys, the group of Scottish artists known for their Impressionist technique and subject matter. His choice of subject for this watercolour may have been influenced by John Lavery's large Tennis Party of 1885 (Aberdeen Art Gallery); Lavery was one of the leading figures of the group.Provenance
Part of an album of watercolours by the Glasgow Art Club presented to the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) by the Lord Provost when the Prince opened the International Exhibition at Glasgow on 8 May 1888. -
