In March 1863, Princess Alexandra travelled from Denmark to England for her marriage to Queen Victoria's eldest son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Her arrival procession through London took almost three hours. On the way it passed the gateway of Temple Bar, the structure seen in the centre of this watercolour, which marked the westernmost boundary of the City of London. On this occasion it was specially draped in red and gold with the figure of Hymen, the god of marriage, placed at the top.
