An illustrator's drawing depicting the Special Chinese Ambassador, Li Hongzhang (1823–1901, also known as Li Hung-Chang), being presented to Queen Victoria by the Marquis of Salisbury in the Dining Room at Osborne on 5 August 1896.
This drawing was reproduced in the Graphic, 15 August 1896 and again on 26 January 1901 (the second publication of this image was as part of a commemorative issue following the death of the queen). Shown with Victoria are the Duke and Duchess of Sparta and the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Li Hongzhang, whose son accompanied him at this event, travelled to the United Kingdom as part of a diplomatic tour which also included visits to Germany, Canada, Russia and the United States. The Special Chinese Ambassador presented gifts to Queen Victoria on behalf of the Chinese emperor (see RCINs 58815.1-2 and 35398) as well as gifts from himself (see RCIN 2391). He was one of the first appointments of an Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order which had been instituted in April 1896.Provenance
