MacNab stands full-length wearing kilt and plaid of MacNab tartan, with a sword under under his left arm. MacNaughton, seated on a rock, wears MacNaughton tartan, and a Gaelic Speaking medal. In the background is seen Ben More and Stob-an-Ean, Glen Dochart, Perthshire. MacNab was a builder, MacNaughton a weaver.

On 26 May 1868 MacLeay was paid 30 gns and his expenses while working in Perthshire on this double portrait (Royal Archives PP2/130/14121)
