-
A view through an ogee-arched window in the Bow Room, Schloss Callenberg, towards a quatrefoil balustrade beyond which is an extensive landscape with the Veste Coburg on the left and a forest on the right. Inside on the left is a flower stand, on the right a fringed stool and an embroidery basket.
In the late sixteenth century Schloss Callenberg became the property of Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg. After a period of ownership under the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen, in 1826 the castle again became the property of the Coburg Dukes. As one of the residences of Prince Albert’s brother Duke Ernest II, it was renovated by Georg Konrad Rothbart in 1856-8. This watercolour dates after these alterations.
The Royal Collection holds an oil painting by Ferdinand Zschäck recording the same view (RCIN 402505). Originally a painter of porcelain, Zschäck enjoyed greater success through his paintings in oils, his landscapes earning him the patronage of Duke Ernest II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Although it is thought that he hoped to be officially recognised as painter to the ducal court, Zschäck never received the official appointment. -
