A watercolour view of Coburg, with the towers of the Ehrenburg Palace and the Morizkirche seen rising above the trees and the Veste Coburg at the upper left. A double rainbow is also visible in the sky. Signed and dated lower right: am 25 Juli 1841. R.
Coburg was the homeland of Prince Albert, husband to Queen Victoria. The royal couple collected many watercolour views of places in Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, mounting them into a sequence of three albums. This watercolour was mounted in the second of these albums.
The Veste Coburg is a fortress on the hill above the town, which was restored by Prince Albert's father, Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He also created the modern, habitable Ehrenburg Palace. Queen Victoria visited her husband's homeland for the first time with him in 1845. On arriving in Coburg on 19th August, Victoria recorded in her journal that "I cannot say all I felt on entering this dear old place."Provenance
Acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and mounted in the second of their three views of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha albums
