A watercolour depicting a topographical view of lush growth in the glasshouse of the winter garden at Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha; palms reach up to the glass roof. Signed at bottom right: C. Trost.
Schloss Friedenstein, built between 1643 and 1656, was restored by and served as the residence of Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the father of Prince Albert. It is Germany's largest early Baroque palace, surrounded by one of the country's earliest landscape gardens in the English style. The glasshouse lay to the east of Schloss Friedenstein, between the castle and the Orangery.Provenance
Probably acquired by Prince Albert; mounted by him in one of three albums of views of his homeland, Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
