A watercolour and bodycolour view of Gebel e Taiji and the Convent of Sittah in Egypt from the water, with two boats in the foreground. Inscribed "Convent Sittah 9th Feb.y 1869". On two conjoined sheets. Following his accompanying of Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, on an intended world tour on HMS Galatea in 1867-8 (see, for example, RCIN 925421), Brierly was then engaged by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) to document the tour of the Prince and Princess of Wales to the Middle East in 1869. At the end of 1868 Brierly sailed on board HMS Ariadne for Trieste, where on 27 January 1869 the ship was joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales. The royal party sailed for Egypt two days later, arriving on 2 February, and for the next two months they explored the Nile as far upstream as Wadi Halfa. Thirteen of the watercolours that Brierly produced on this trip were exhibited, with the permission of the Prince of Wales, at the winter exhibition of the Old Watercolour Society 1871-2.
