A watercolour of a topographical interior view at Windsor Castle showing two Christmas trees flanked by numerous presents. Signed, dated and inscribed at lower right: 1850/Xmas/Windsor/Castle/Js Roberts.
Queen Victoria gives an account of her childrens' reactions to receiving their presents in her journal entry for 24 December 1850: "The 7 Children were then taken to their tree, jumping & shouting with joy over their toys & other presents; the Boys could think of nothing but the swords we had given them & Bertie of some armour, which however he complained, pinched him! Mama had her tree & table in the same room".
Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria for her souvenir albums. Roberts was paid £22 for three drawings of the Christmas rooms by the end of 1850, however it appears that only two were created (RCIN 919812 and 919813).
