A watercolour showing the turrets and gables of the old Castle on the left and rough ground rather than formal gardens in the foreground. The artist was in Waiting during the Queen's first visit to Balmoral, 8-28 September 1848. She produced a series of watercolours which give a clear impression of the old Castle in its setting, before Prince Albert began his extensive tree planting. The verso is inscribed with the name of the artist, title, the date 'September 1848', & the number 'P 2.1 2'.
