Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
The north front of Windsor Castle from the Thames c. 1780 - c. 1790
Bodycolour | RCIN 918987
-
A bodycolour drawing of the north front of Windsor Castle seen from the Thames, with cattle wallowing in the water. Sunset light. Pumphouse at the centre.
Sandby made hundreds of watercolours and bodycolours of Windsor Castle and the surrounding area throughout his career, making them often difficult to date. The soft sunset light and cattle grazing recall the landscapes of Sandby's friend Richard Wilson, and this work probably dates to the 1780s.
