A pencil and watercolour drawing of a view of Buckingham House and Westminster, looking south-east. Several figures in the foreground. Inscribed at the foot in ink 'A view from Constitution Hill towards West Minster. A.H. 1734'. Damaged and discoloured.
An engraving of this view titled 'A View from Constitution Hill Anno 1735', by a 'J.H' [sic] and engraved by Edmund Scott was published by Richard Godfrey on 1 June 1779. The drawing was published as part of Grose's Antiquarian Repository, 1808, vol. II, p.181 and attributed to 'the late ingenious Mr Hackell'.
Augustin Heckel was a painter, jeweller and engraver from Augsburg, who came to England as a young man. He was among a number of foreign artists attracted to the thriving community around the St Martin's Lane Academy, a group that also included George Michael Moser and Henri-Francois Gravelot. Other works by Heckel are in the V&A, Fitzwilliam Museum, and British Museum.Provenance
