A pencil and watercolour drawing in Hyde Park, with a single elm in the centre, and a row of trees behind. A carriage, drawn in pencil, is in the centre left, with several houses in the north-east corner of the park in the distance. The hills of Hampstead are on the horizon. On the far right is an unfinished pencil outline of a tree. Possibly drawn on the spot in Hyde Park.
From 1774 Paul Sandby lived opposite Hyde Park at 4 St George's Row, Bayswater and made many drawings of the park, including a series of the encampments after the Gordon Riots in 1780. The drawing is mounted on a twentieth-century mount with brown wash-line borders. Inscribed on the mount below, 'Hyde Park. P. Sandby R.A. 1725-1809'. Pasted on the verso, a label inscribed in ink, possibly in the artist's hand 'In Hyde Park P.S.' Inscribed below by Sir Owen Morshead, former Librarian, 'This label was on the drawing when I bought it, and is an indubitable attestation. O. F. Morshead'.Provenance
Bought November 1944 by Sir Owen Morshead (15 gns) at Walker Galleries, New Bond Street
