Poor Holms, or a fortune teller 1798
Pen and ink with watercolour | 32.0 x 27.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 917236
-
A watercolour of an old man in a fur dressing gown, a peacock fan in his right hand, addressing four young women, one of whom holds a paper headed 'potion'. On a chair to the right, a Bible lies open at 'Isaiah'. In a niche behind the man are wooden figures. This is presumably the drawing exhibited by Eckstein at the Royal Academy in 1799 as 'A Fortune-teller'. A note on the modern mount states that 'Poor Holms' was written on the back of the drawing.
Provenance
Probably the 'Drawing Poor Holms' purchased by the Prince of Wales from Colnaghi on 26 December 1799 for £5 5s (Royal Archives GEO/MAIN/27699).
