The landscape painter and diarist Joseph Farington gives us a invaluable resource for the study of the London art world after the formation of the Royal Academy in 1768 in the form of his extensive diaries; the manuscripts for these famous diaries are in the Royal Library, together with sketchbooks from Scotland and Wales, and other papers and travel notes. This drawing forms a pair with RCIN 917179, a view of Shrewsbury Castle. The drawings are recorded in Farington's diary (see 29 January - 16 April 1821) as having been commissioned by Sir Gregory Page Turner through J. Booth, the bookseller. Although they are said to be Farington's last drawings, both were largely painted by Mary Smirke, the daughter of the painter Robert Smirke, whose family was close to Farington and looked after him after the death of his wife in 1800.
