A watercolour view of the gardens at Kew with grazing sheep and a shepherd in the foreground. Signed in ink: J. Fisher 1782. Inscribed on the verso on the mount: A View of the Lawn taken from the Windows of the Royal Palace at Kew.
The attribution to Bishop Fisher is based both on the signature and his regular visits to the Palace at this time, as a royal tutor and chaplain. The Rev. Dr John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury was good friends with George III and a proficient draughtsman, as mentioned regularly in Fanny Burney's Diary. In 1780 he was appointed Preceptor (tutor) to Prince Edward, later Duke of Kent, a position he held until 1785. The drawing is on a washed mount. -
