A watercolour view of Windsor Castle from the Thames river. Whatman watermark dated 181-, discoloured and faded.
The watercolourist John Varley trained under Joseph Barrow and became an influential teacher to David Cox, Turner of Oxford and others. He attended Dr Monro's evening classes where he met JMW Turner and Thomas Girtin, and travelled extensively in Wales. This watercolour is much faded but shows a subtle use of thin washes. Another watercolour of Windsor by Varley is 917742.Provenance
