A view at Bridgnorth, Shropshire c. 1775 - c. 1785
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 33.0 x 51.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914718

A pencil, pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the river at Bridgnorth in Shropshire, with boats in the water and figures, horses and cattle on the banks. Bridge over the river at the centre. The sheet mounted on an orange wash-line border, possibly trimmed.
Sandby travelled through Bridgnorth during his visit to the estate of Sir William Watkins Wynn at Wynnstay in 1771, during which he made many sketches and views of north Wales. He published an aquatint of Bridgnorth in 1778 (RCIN 817138.aq). A. P. Oppé lists this drawing as 'after Paul Sandby', but it is listed among autograph drawings in the Royal Library in William Sandby's list in his biography of Paul and Thomas Sandby, London 1892, p. 216, and the style is consistent with Sandby's work. As is often the case with Sandby, there are other versions of the drawing (one in a private collection).Provenance
Acquired at Colnaghi, 7 July 1813 for £2. 2s by George IV when Prince Regent (Royal Archives invoice 27930)
