A watercolour drawing of a view in Windsor Great Park, with a rustic seat between trees on the extreme left. In the distance, beyond an open space with scattered clumps of trees. Unfinished in the foreground. On two sheets of paper joined vertically. Inscribed in a plaque on the frame, 'from Sandpit Gate looking North'.
This work is one of a set of five watercolours of Cranbourne and the Great Park, all early works by Thomas Sandby, who continued to work for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland after returning from Scotland following the Duke's appointment as Ranger of Windsor Great Park (the others are RCINs 914636, 914638, 914639, 914640). In 1768 a set of 'Six Different Views of Cranbourne Lodge and Park' was recorded in the Duke's Dressing Room at the Great Lodge; they are almost certainly the same as the 'Six different Views in Water Colours' recorded in the same room three years earlier (Royal Archives: WRA CP 1/19). The sixth view has not survived.
The identification of this view on the plaque as having been taken from Sandpit Gate, Thomas Sandby's residence in the park, is difiicult to verify and may be unfounded. The distant house may be Cranbourne Lodge, one of the homes of the Duke of Cumberland from 1751. Oppé has drawn particular attention to the unfinished areas in the foreground, noting that the patches of loose colour were intended to be worked up so that the pencil marks were no longer visible.
