Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
The Gamekeeper's Lodge, Windsor Great Park c. 1765
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 7.7 x 11.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914632
-
A watercolour drawing of an elaborate stone-built Gothic house on a grassy embankment, with a path running alongside. On the right is a distant view with water and a cloudy sky. Inscribed in pencil at the top right, 'Game Keepers Lodge Windsor Gt Park'. The sheet has been trimmed at the lower edge some time in the twentieth century as Edward VII's stamp, appearing on many drawings in the Royal Collection, is truncated.
The Keeper's House at Virginia Water was built to Thomas Sandby's designs and overlooked the pondhead. The house is seen in situ in RCIN 914660. The same pencil hand appears on other drawings in the Royal Collection (for example, RCINs 914523, 914630, 914631) and is possibly that of the artist. -
