Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
The North View of Windsor Castle from the Eton Bank c. 1777
Pen and ink and wash on tracing paper | 31.0 x 46.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914617
-
A pen and ink and wash drawing on tracing paper, showing a north view of Windsor Castle from the Eton bank, with the wooden bridge and King's Engine House to the left. The Royal Barge on the river in the centre. Sheet torn and laid down.
Sandby made many hundreds of drawings of Windsor Castle and the surrounding area, often repeating the same views across drawings, watercolour and prints. This drawing is apparently a preparatory study for an aquatint of the same subject published on 1 January 1777, 'Windsor from Eton' (for example, British Museum 1904,0819.757). He repeated the same subject again in a bodycolour dated 1801, RCIN 451608. It was probably also the preparatory study for a similar view in bodycolour that was bequeathed to the Royal Academy by William Sandby, and two other watercolours in the Royal Collection (RCINs 452655 and 452398).
Provenance
Probably Royal Collection by 1892 (W. Sandby, Thomas and Paul Sandby, London, 1892, pp. 213-8)
