A watercolour drawing of a cottage set behind two large trees. A fence runs across the front of the cottage, with a standing female figure. Signed in pen with the initials P.S. on the base of the tree, and inscribed in pen and ink, 'In Old Windsor Wood'. Inscribed in pencil on the verso, 'Back of Bishopsgate, Windsor Gt Park'. Drawn on two sheets of paper. The lower sheet has been pasted onto another sheet, onto which the upper portion of the drawing and the grey and pink wash line border have been drawn. The lower sheet has extensive use of pen and ink, the upper sheet has none. Another version of the same subject is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 917872). Another version from the collection of William Sandby was at Christie's, January 1959.
Provenance
Probably bought by George IV when Prince of Wales at Colnaghi for 1 guinea on 6 February 1812 (Archives invoice no. 27673), described as 'Drawing, View of the Back of Bishopsgate Windsor Gt. Park'
