A watercolour drawing of Windsor Castle, seen from the Long Walk. The Round Tower is to the left and the West Front at the centre, with several houses in front. In the foreground are three cows. To the left, two men on horseback. A horse and carriage at the centre foreground. Trees on the left and right. Inscribed on the back of the sheet in pen, 'Windsor', and in pencil 'P. Sandby'. The sheet of paper is circumscribed with a black ink line. The black ink and green wash border has a partially erased inscription in brown ink, 'By Paul Sandby'. The view shows the houses at the west front of the Castle before they were altered and enlarged from 1778 to 1782 for the erection of the Queen's Lodge. The Queen's Lodge was demolished in 1825.
A pencil drawing of the same subject is in the Staatliche Museen Greiz (E 445), dated 1776. A similar view appears in an oil painting by Sawrey Gilpin and William Marlow of the Duke of Cumberland visiting his stud (RCIN 400928). Another watercolour of this subject by Sandby is RCIN 917890.Provenance
