Part of Windsor from Datchet Lane c. 1780
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 21.8 x 43.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914594
-
A watercolour drawing of the north side of Windsor Castle, seen from Datchet Lane. The Castle is on the left, houses on the right. In the foreground, a man with a loaded cart and horse; other figures and a soldier walking along the lane. The houses are lit from behind suggesting a sunset. The sheet is mounted on a yellow, grey and blue wash line border associated with works acquired at the Paul Sandby estate sale in 1811. The mount is inscribed in pencil, probably in a later hand, 'Part of Windsor from Datchet Lane 1770'. The mount is watermarked 1798. The viewpoint is taken from Datchet Lane to the east of Isherwood's Brewery (see RCINs 914595, 914596 and 452667). An etching of the same view is inscribed 'drawn 1769, Etch'd 1780' (for example, British Museum). A pencil drawing of the same view is in the Staatliche Museen, Greiz (E 503).
Provenance
Possibly Paul Sandby (sale, Christie's 2 May 1811); Royal Collection possibly by 1892 (W. Sandby, p. 215), certainly by 1910
