View to the east over the Little Park c. 1765
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 28.6 x 57.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 914576

A watercolour drawing of the view from the North Terrace, Windsor Castle. A plateau across the centre is dissected by a line of trees across the centreground. More trees on the left, and a view in the distance. On the far left, the spire of Datchet church. In the foreground, a herd of deer and two horses. On two sheets of paper, joined at the left. The whole sheet is circumscribed with two black ink lines. The drawing was previously mounted on another sheet with strips of coloured paper, of a type associated with drawings from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks (for other examples, see RCINs 914575 and 914559). A pen and ink label added to the verso of the work by Banks also survives.
It has been suggested that this watercolour may be the work of Sandby's brother, Thomas. A later bodycolour of the same view by Paul Sandby is in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry KT, Drumlanrig. The view from the North Terrace looking east towards London is seen in other drawings by Sandby (for example, RCIN 914577). This area was levelled in about 1780. Deer were kept in the Little Park until the beginning of the nineteenth century. The drawing is among Sandby's expansive views of country estates; Bonehill and Daniels (Picturing Britain, exh cat. 2009, p. 200) have written about the patriotic assocations of such landscapes with political ideals of liberty influenced by John Locke.Provenance
