Henry III Tower and the Round Tower from the Black Rod c. 1770
Bodycolour | 37.1 x 47.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914563
-
A bodycolour drawing of Windsor Castle, showing the Henry III Tower and the Round Tower from the Black Rod. The foreground is in shade. On the right is a small brick cottage against a high wall. A woman in apron and bonnet is seated in the doorway next to a man on a stool. A boy is leaning against the cottage wall holding a cat being frightened by a dog. The sheet of paper is circumscribed with a black line that extends to the mount. The mount has a gold, blue, grey and black wash line border of a type associated with works from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks. Inscribed on the verso in pencil, 'Windsor from the Black Rod'. A drawing in ink and wash of the same subject is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914562), probably a preparatory study. The buildings in the Black Rod were demolished during George III's improvement works in the 1780s.
