Pencil, pen and ink and wash on thin paper | 24.9 x 34.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914562
-
A pen and ink and wash drawing of Windsor Castle from the Black Rod, showing the Henry III Tower on the left and the Round Tower on the right. At the centre, a man is hammering the wheel of an overturned barrow. Inscribed at the lower right in pen and brown ink, 'Black Rod Windsor Castle'. Inscribed in the doorway in pencil on the right, 'black, mould, pug', and above the parapet in the upper right, 'brick'. On creased paper, with a slit running from right to centre. Appears to be numbered at the top in pencil, 177 or 179.
The drawing is loosely executed and similar in technique to RCIN 914567. Possibly a sketch taken on the spot. A bodycolour drawing (RCIN 914563) shows the same view, the present drawing is possibly the model. An outline etching of the same subject was included in a series of Windsor views published in 1780. -
