Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
A nocturne at Windsor Castle with bonfire and festivities c. 1776
Pen and ink, wash and watercolour | 29.2 x 45.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914558
-
A pen and ink, wash and watercolour drawing on grey paper of a bonfire and festivities taking place near the Round Tower in Windsor Castle. St George's Chapel on the left, looking up towards the Round Tower and Norman Arch. A carriage and horses on the left, with other groups of figures including a ratcatcher with his box. On a grey wash-line bordered mount, now trimmed.
The drawing shows the same view as an aquatint dated 1 September 1776 showing Bonfire Night celebrations, 'Windsor Castle from the Lower Court on the 5th November' (British Museum 1904,0819.754). Sandby also depicted nocturnal celebrations at Windsor for George III's birthday in 1768 (RCIN 914584), a work that was possibly exhibited at Spring Gardens that year (no. 145). A drawing of the ratcatcher in the foreground is RCIN 914510.
