Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
'Jefferies, Map & Printseller of St Martin's Lane' c. 1770 - c. 1780
Pencil and wash | 13.8 x 11.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914519
-
A pencil and wash drawing of a man asleep, lying across two chairs. A bottle on the floor to the left. Mounted together with RCINs 914515-914520, and inscribed below on the modern mount: Jefferies, Map & Printseller, bottom of St Martin's Lane. This inscription is probably copied from an earlier album, or from the verso of the drawing. The sitter is presumably Thomas Jefferies the younger, map engraver of St Martin's Lane and Geographer to George III from 1761-83. In 1765 Jefferies stocked Ryland and Byer's publication of one hundred Paul Sandby etchings (see William Sandby, p. 28). A drawing in the same medium, inscribed with the name of the same sitter, is in the British Museum (1904,0819.270).
Provenance
From a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811 and described in William Sandby, Thomas and Paul Sandby (London, 1892), p. 218: 'Jeffrys, the printseller' -
