A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of two female figures, one seated and one leaning over a parapet. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one 'At Edinburgh'. Mounted together with RCINs 914502-10. The step and the parapet suggest that the location is Old Somerset House Gardens rather than Edinburgh or Windsor. The seated female figure appears in another drawing of Somerset House (RCIN 914447) and the same parapet appears in RCIN 914450. The leaning figure appears in a view from the Gardens of Somerset House, attributed to Thomas Sandby, in the Crowle Pennant at the British Museum (L.B.9).
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
