Somerset House Terrace c.1760
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 12.0 x 15.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914450
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing showing two men seen from behind, leaning on the parapet of Somerset House, London. The outlines incised for transfer. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one 'Thos Sandby'. Mounted together with RCINs 914448 and 914449. Inscribed below on the modern mount, 'On Windsor Terrace / Paul Sandby'. The three drawings on this mount were exhibited at the Royal Academy (British Art), 1943, no. 594, where the inscriptions differed slightly. Despite an inscription on the current mount which suggests that the figures are on the North Terrace of Windsor Castle, this drawing probably depicts figures on the terrace of Somerset House in London. The figure on the right is supposedly Thomas Sandby, the brother of the artist and himself a talented draughtsman.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
