Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
On Windsor Terrace c.1760
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 8.1 x 13.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914448
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of five figures promenading on the North Terrace, Windsor Castle. A slight indication of landscape to the background. The figures are numbered below in pencil, 3, 2, 1, and 4. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one 'Mr Howse', 'Col. Watson', 'Miss Clark' and 'Mr Yeoman'. Mounted together with RCINs 914449 and 914450. Inscribed below on the modern mount, 'On Windsor Terrace / Paul Sandby'. The three drawings on this mount were exhibited at the Royal Academy (British Art), 1943, no. 594, where the inscriptions differed slightly and the drawings were said to have born Sandby's signature. The inscriptions are all associated with people that Sandby knew in Scotland: Mr Howse or Rev Howse appears in two other drawings (RCINs 914416 and 914513) (but was described in 1934 as 'Mr Hervey on the survey of Scotland'); Colonel David Watson led the Military Survey in Scotland and appears in RCIN 914405; Miss Clark is described as 'Miss Clark Edinr' in the 1934 catalogue; and Mr Yeoman is also described as 'Mr Yeoman, Edinr' in that catalogue. The group on the left appears in a bodycolour view of the North Terrace (RCIN 453778); the drawing is possibly not preparatory for the bodycolour but a repetition from another drawing. The old man from behind appears in a bodycolour by Sandby at Harewood House. The apparent presence of Scottish figures on the terrace at Windsor probably indicates that the drawing was based on an earlier one from Sandby's period in Scotland. Sandby often reused and redrew figures and figure groups.
