Pen and ink and watercolour | 10.5 x 16.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914446
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the terrace at Old Somerset House, looking east. A lady in a yellow panniered dress is standing in conversation with a man in blue coat. A lady seated at the left. The river and St Paul's Cathedral in the distance. Mounted together with RCIN 914447. Inscribed at the bottom on the modern mount, possibly copied from an earlier one, 'In Somerset House Gardens'. Sandby settled in London from 1752. The male figure and standing female figure appear in a drawing of the view from the gardens of Somerset House, attributed to Thomas Sandby in the Crowle Pennant at the British Museum (L.B.9). Sandby manipulated some architectural elements: the colonnade behind lay parallel to the river instead of at right angles to it.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
