Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
At Edinburgh c. 1750
Pencil and watercolour | 11.6 x 18.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914407
-
A pencil and watercolour drawing of two ladies in black panniered dresses and white caps seated in an interior, facing each other. On the wall behind is a landscape painting and a mirror. In the window is a view of St Giles, Edinburgh. This is one of Sandby's earliest figure studies, dating from his years in Scotland from 1747-52. A similar drawing in size and style is RCIN 914406. The method of tying a corsage with a single ribbon is possibly a local fashion, and can be seen in a portrait of Lady Hall of Dunglass by Allan Ramsay (Tate).
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
