Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
Brigadier-General B. Deley, Engineer 1750
Pen and ink and watercolour | 10.1 x 10.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914404
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of a man standing in a panelled interior by a window, reading a book. Inscribed on an earlier mount, probably copied from an earlier one, 'Brig.-Gen. B. Deley, Engineer, 1750'. Sandby worked for the Board of Ordnance on the military survey of Scotland until about 1752. The drawing is probably one of his colleagues, although no Brigadier-General Deley has been identified in army lists of the period.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
