A red and black chalk drawing of a female figure seated in an interior, spinning using a birdcage distaff. In the background, pictures on the wall and a seated maid threading a needle. Numbered in the upper right corner, '14'. Inscribed below in pen and ink, 'Wife of Mr Lane who purchased first the pictures by Hogarth of Marriage Alamode' ['pictures' written over a tear in the paper]. The same 'beehive' hat is seen in RCIN 914321 and the Queen Anne chair in RCIN 914396. John Lane of Hillingdon's decription of his purchase of the six paintings from William Hogarth in 1750 after the artist's failed attempt to auction them is told in Nichols' 'Biograph. Anecd. of William Hogarth', 1781, p.107. A letter in the British Library (Add MS 36994) from the Sandbys' friend Theodosius Forrest to Thomas Sandby at Windsor refers to a shoemaker in Queen Street that had worked for Mrs Lane.
