A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the interior of a cottage, with a man in the livery of the Duke of Cumberland, green coat and crimson waistcoat, pumping water. Behind are two women washing kitchen utensils at a window, and an old man seated with a dog by an open door. Inscribed below in the artist's hand in pen and ink: The Kitchen at Sandpit Gate Wr. Park 1754. P. S.'
Thomas Sandby lived at Sandpit Gate in Windsor from about 1746, where he was employed by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. Paul Sandby returned to London from Scotland in 1751, settling permanently by 1752. He often visited his elder brother at Windsor and made several drawings of scenes of daily life at the cottage (see RCINs 914333, 914330, 914328 and 914329). These humble interior scenes are redolent of Dutch 17th century interiors that Sandby would have known through prints and paintings.
