Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 23.7 x 16.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914330
-
A watercolour drawing of two women in a domestic interior, laundering at a table by a window, seen through an open doorway. On the right, a Queen Anne chair and a drawing pinned to the wall, inscribed in tiny letters 'P Sandby Fecit Old Win[dsor] July 1751'. Thomas Sandby lived at Sandpit Gate in Windsor from about 1746, where he was employed by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. Paul Sandby returned to London from Scotland in 1751, settling permanently by 1752. He often visited his elder brother at Windsor and made several drawings of figures in domestic interiors. Oppe catalogued the drawing as 'At Sandpit Gate', presumably copied from an earlier mount.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
