A watercolour depicting the caricatured figure of Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimer standing on a landing stage and holding an oar in his left hand and red handerchief in the right. He is shown full-length and in profile to the left. Dated and inscribed.
Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimer was the nephew of William IV and Queen Adelaide, and playfellow of the young Princess (later Queen) Victoria. The Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra), along with Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, were also staying with the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland at Trentham between 24 - 26 June 1866.
This caricature, and those of RCIN 917009 and 917008, have all traditionally been attributed to Arnold Keppel, 8th Earl of Albemarle. Keppel was, however, only eight years old when this watercolour was executed, which makes his authorship seem unlikely.Provenance
? King Edward VII when Prince of Wales
