A preliminary study showing the moment when the procession is forming after the ceremony, as the bride and bridegroom are about to descend the altar steps of St George's Chapel, Windsor. This drawing is a study for the painting of 'The Marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales' (RCIN 406997). The marriage ceremony of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) took place on 10 March 1863 in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. This smaller, less public venue was particularly chosen by Queen Victoria who was still in mourning following the death of Prince Albert less than two years before. Dressed in black, The Queen watched the ceremony from the privacy of the Edward IV Chantry immediately above the high altar.
