Watercolour and bodycolour on buff paper | 12.5 x 20.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 913367
-
A watercolour of Carmen and Doña Sol, the two Spanish heifers at Osborne. On buff paper with a ruled pencil and bodycolour border. The two heifers along with the bull Don Juan were specially imported for Queen Victoria from Oporto, North Portugal, in 1880. They were kept at Osborne, and Queen Victoria recorded in her journal seeing Barber sketching them at Barton Farm there on a number of occasions. Barber executed an oil painting of the cattle for the Queen later that same year (RCIN 404307). See RCINs 913370, 913366 and 913369 for other watercolours by Barber of the Spanish cattle. Barber, an animal and sporting painter, enjoyed Queen Victoria's patronage, and she remarked upon his death that he "had such talent & did so many things for me" (Journal, 28 November 1894).
Provenance
Probably one of the "Studies of Cattle" for which Barber was paid £25 17s on 17 June 1881
