The Young Politician c.1771
Pen and ink and watercolour over pencil | 22.0 x 18.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 913259
-
A caricature of a man with a fox's head and tail, being attended to by hairdressers. This represents the politican Charles James Fox and links an excessive interest in fashion with political corruption. The hairdressers use pages from the Magna Carta as curlpapers, while Fox looks at his reflection in a mirror. Jars of scent and rouge sit on the dressing table, a bag of hair powder and 'A New Essay on Politick by C -F - Esq' lie on the floor. Published as 'The Young Politician' by H Bryer in London, probably in 1771. See George's catalogue of personal and political satires in the British Museum, no. 4892.
