A watercolour of a brawl in an inn. To the left two boys hold copies of the Morning Post and pugilistic scenes are pasted to the wall behind. The preparatory drawing for the satirical print of the same title (Catalogue of Satirical Prints in the British Museum no. 5200). The brawl was the result of a dispute between the Reverend Henry Bate (later Sir Henry Bate Dudley, baronet) and George Robert Fitzgerald, ringleader of a group of macaronis who insulted Bate's future sister-in-law. Fitzgerald's footman Captain Miles was set up for a boxing match with Bate, which Bates easily won. Here, Miles is shown attacking Fitzgerald and a companion in revenge for his humiliation. The presence of the boys is explained in the satirical print, which records that Bate, editor of the Morning Post, and a companion Dr Trusler, attended the Pantheon masquerade dressed as newsboys. The finished print has the newsboys removed and shown as prints on the wall.
