The Swiss-born Albert Edward Chalon grew up and worked in England after his father was appointed to a post at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Chalon became a society portrait painter, and made portraits of the Duchess of Kent. Chalon also served as Painter in Watercolours to Queen Victoria. Princess Victoria visited England together with her three cousins (see RCINs 451817 and 451813) between June-September 1839. On June 10 1839, Queen Victoria mentioned in her journal that all four were being painted by Chalon.Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria, recorded hanging in the Passage Room (Room no 216) at Windsor Castle in 1878. Transferred to the Royal Library in 1930.
