The Swiss-born Albert Edward Chalon grew up and worked in England after his father was appointed to a post at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Chalon became a society portrait painter, exhibiting a portrait of the Duchess of Kent at the Royal Academy in 1838, no. 623. This watercolour was lithographed by R. J. Lane the same year. Chalon also served as Painter in Watercolours to Queen Victoria.Provenance
